THEY’RE PILEUS IRIDESCENT & LENTICULAR CLOUDS !!!

The images of these clouds are spectacular.  I had never seen anything like them until I stumbled upon these photographs.  And they do resemble the “Hollywood Image” of UFO’s, but they are NOT UFO’s !!! 

I have been reading Carl Sagan’s book, The Demon-Haunted World:  Science as a Candle in the Dark.  He has some interesting things to say about UFO’s and Science.

In the first chapter, Carl Sagan relates a conversation he had with a man who had been appointed as a Driver to collect Sagan at the airport and escort him to a Conference.

Sagan writes ……………….

“And so we got to talking.  But not, …. about Science.  He wanted to talk about frozen extraterrestrials languishing in an Air Force base near San Antonio, channeling …. the minds of dead people, crystals, the prophecies of Nostradamus, astrology, the Shroud of Turin. …. Each time I had to disappoint him.”

“As we drove, …. I could see, …. I was dismissing not just some Errant Doctrine, but a precious facet of his inner life.”

“And yet, there’s so much in Real Science that’s equally exciting, more mysterious, a greater intellectual challenge – as well as being a lot closer to the truth.”

I have learned most of my Science just in the last 20 or so years, watching PBS NOVA SCIENCE and reading SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN magazine.  About fifteen years ago Scientific American magazine changed their format and began writing in plain English, and they dropped the heavy-duty math formulas.   NOVA and SCI-AM have made Science much more accessible to the non-Science population.

And I have discovered that Science is so much fun!  And useful!
