ALERT: Snakes in fashion

As you probably know, according to the Chinese calendar, 2013 is the year of the Snake. Although there are still a few days to celebrate ( as it will fall on Feb 10th) the special atmosphere and happiness is already in the air.

Street parades, feature festivals, dancing, traditional Chinese costumes, food stalls, arts and crafts. You know what ? I pretty much enjoy this because it gives me a chance to experience a different culture and makes my life here (in Jakarta) a bit of more interesting. And somehow inspires me to write this post. Well, maybe not the celebration themselves but the zodiac for this year. I wanted to see how this reflects on fashion world, and how this become the muse to designers.

Lets face it; The snake as a motif or snake-skin graphically painted on fabrics or reproduced as a textured leather isn’t new to the industry. Over the years it has earned a permanent place. However recently, it is appearing more and more;taking over the catwalk and the high street and this makes it one of the hottest style of the moment. There is no doubt that it is all thanks to the Lunar New Year which influences the sudden growth and use of this symbol. Am I wrong?

To be honest this whole “snake style” never excited me but ( there is always but) during a little research I think that I found a few pieces which may change my perception. I do not know who I can blame for this sudden turn but I can say that the snake of this year is getting a bit of a face-lift. It seems more interesting and doesn’t look dated, and vulgar. Probably over the years this has been putting me off.

So here we go; below are my “findings” the statement pieces which I could easily adopt to my wardrobe. Of course I could only wear them as each piece as wearing them in one ensemble could be too much. I could probably wear each of these pieces with something simple and plain…something that will let them shine in their own light…
